The job done on the recording is a step up in what was already a fantastic recording. Hats off to Sir Mick, and to Mr. Bertrando! The last vestiges of the 60's were over or fading away, Owsley was in jail, T.C. had left the previous year, and Mickey departed early in 71. The Dead had already retrenched a bit in 1970, stepping back from the swirling maelstrom of their 68-69 style and releasing two very songwriterly albums - not a prepared piano or sound of thick air to be heard. In 1971, they tightened up even further; this was the year of 5 minute Playin's and 10 min. Other One's. Dark Star was played all of 12 times. The sound went all to hell; in Dan Healy's words (as quoted in Rock Scully's book, Living with the Dead), "The sound was terrible .... The music was disgusting." But the very s@#$iness of the sound could be a source of great excitement. It was a nasty, gritty, raw sound that grabbed you by the ears and shook your head. It grabbed you in the belly and didn't let go. Meanwhile, the jams were all there - the rocking, the screaming Jerry leads, the Phil bombs, the spacey jams, the transitions - just shorter and more concise. This recording is a great showcase for the 71 sound (much better than the unremastered source, which is a half-step high the whole show). The sound on this audience recording is better than many sound boards. Cumberland Blues is a ferocious version; Hard to Handle even better. Weir has solved the "Bobby problem" by now, driving the boogaloo rhythm of this song with a staccato attack that sticks in your head. HtH peaked in 1971, with Bill Graham calling this version, which appears on "Fallout from the Phil Zone," the best ever, "Can there be any question?" BTW, the Phil Zone version is also an audience recording - maybe from the same source. The Truckin'>Drums>Other One>Me & My Uncle>Other One, while short compared to later explorations, contains some fierce jamming and stop-on-a-dime transitions. Check out the Weather Report Suite Prelude tease by Bob in TOO reprise, more than 1 1/2 years before its first official appearance. The Lovelight is no slouch either; Pigpen's in great form, and the longest song of the night (24 min) goes by surprisingly quickly. In a year of raw energy, short songs, and tight jams, this show is a standout, not as an exception to the rule, but as one of the best shows within the rule - and again, I'm excluding the fall tour with Keith Godchaux (mostly because I haven't heard much from that period). I like to jam a little with my guitar while i listen to tapes and this is right on key from cumberland on. I know the one I streamed from nugs.net is about a quarter step to high. It adds a truer fidelity to the sound. Plus this is a smokin show from beginning to the end. The Cumberland is beyond miraculous. And Jerry's solo during Brokedown is *pathetic* (I love the dude in the crowd who can be heard exlaiming "Oh my God" as Jerry pretends to forget what key he is supposed to be soloing in). But it doesn't slow them down. Most important, it's just one sweet audience recording -- maybe the next best in the early history of rock besides Liver Than You'll Ever Be ... Oh yeah, and two words: Bill Kreutzman. This guy basically took over the band for three years starting in 1971. There are no shows where the rest of the band is "on" and Billy isn't.
